If you have been searching for a new home here in Lake or Sonoma County, it is likely that you will have dreamy thoughts of remodeling upon your move-in date. In fact, making alterations could be a determining factor in your allocation for a down payment and closing costs. I mean redesigning a kitchen, bathroom or even a backyard is part of the fun and sometimes the challenge of home ownership. Even if you have a remodel budget saved from recycling aluminum cans and your only construction expertise is building lego sets with the kids – have no fear. Sometimes the only limitation for an elegant new space in your humble abode happens to be your imagination. Here are a great few tips for new homeowners who just need a little inspiration and places to look for it.
Ancient Wisdom Borrowed: The Art of Selling Your House
The process of selling a home here in Sonoma and Lake County during difficult economic times might seem like waging a long and arduous battle. The whole progression, from finding a knowledgeable real estate agent, courting buyers, to staging and negotiations, may feel like a war of attrition. Without the right plan for success, victory can sometimes become fleeting. If you are planning to sell your home, you may take heart with some wisdom from the ancient Chinese military general and philosopher Sun Tzu.
You may know the name Sun Tzu from a popular writings and phrases that focus on military tactics and strategies known as The Art of War. The military treatise has been used for years, not just as a battlefield guide, but also as a path to success in business and even sports. Today, we’ll adapt some a few of Sun Tzu’s philosophies to help you on the path to triumphantly selling your property.

Open Houses 7/24: Space- The Final Frontier
8833 Canyon Oak Drive, Windsor -$649,000
Sunday, July 24, 1-4PM
When the guest list gets a little too big, or ‘those days’ occur when your long lost cousin Jim from Florida and the entire group show up for the family event, it’s great to have lots of space. And this four bedroom, three bath, two-story jewel, located in the Foothill Meadows subdivision, is not lacking for room. In fact, the great room is so large, the kids could play indoor soccer until they run out of energy and fall asleep (although we don’t recommend it).
Sonoma County: A Different Kind of Wealth
While economic struggles in recent years have put a bit of a strain on local jobs and the housing market, despite the financial uncertainty, Sonoma County remains full of wealth. Our wealth comes, not just in the form of the almighty dollar or the value in our properties; rather much of our prosperity comes from the magnificence and beauty within local communities, our environment and all of the splendid things we can see and do.It’s so easy to be caught up in our busy lives and overlook what is just around the corner. Yet, there are nooks and crannies, events and places of prosperity here that cannot always be measured in monetary value. Let’s take a short journey through the experience.

Unemployment News Offers Hope
Are you seeing signs of an improving economy? Let us know.
Within the past few years, economic news was most likely something many of us avoided. Or at the least many of us dreaded reading about. Unemployment news typically offers easier insight into the state of our local economy. On November 19th, our local Press Democrat reported a slight drop in unemployment figures for the month of October.
Could this be a glimmer of hope?
The reported jobless claims dropped approximately .5% to an overall 9.7% unemployment rate. While that number might seem insignificant, the jobless rate stood at 10.1% one year prior. The current rate of unemployment is nearly on par with the national average at 9.6%.
With early holiday spending data showing an increase over the prior year; there are some signs of slow movement within the economy. How this impacts the housing market remains to be seen. It’s quite difficult to speculate on information better left to economists; however, sometimes consumer perception is a catalyst to better things.
As we head into the New Year, let us hope that the perception and news continue to be positive. As citizens of this beautiful region, no matter the news or outlook we continue to remain strong. Please continue to support our local retailers and businesses, lend a helping hand to those less fortunate. Sometimes a little good news is all people need.
Thank you.
Open Cupboard Food Drive – Santa Rosa
Dear Friends,
Real Estate is important to us and likely to you. However, as the temperature drops around the North Bay we should remember to think about those without a roof over their head or food in their belly.
With the season of giving upon us, we are reminded of the great need in our
community this year. Once again, we will be collecting non-perishable food
for the local food banks. As a means of saying thank you, when you make a
donation or two, your name will be entered in our drawing to win one of two
$25 gift cards to the local store of your choice.
By giving a little we can all help those with a little less. Please make
your donations and sign up for the drawing at our office at
